After the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, this child was baptized according to the traditional Roman Rite. The ceremony, preserved through centuries, speaks to the Church’s deep understanding of what it means to be born again in Christ. Before the waters of baptism were poured, the priest placed blessed salt on the child’s lips—a practice dating back to the early Church. This exorcised salt, rich in symbolism, is more than custom. It signifies wisdom, purification, and preservation from corruption. It prepares the soul to hunger for truth and—one day—for the Bread of Life itself. The godmother held the priest’s stole as she carried the child into the church—a gesture affirming that no one enters the Church apart from the Church. A candle was lit, representing the light of faith entrusted to the newly baptized. And finally, baptism: original sin washed away, and a new soldier of Christ enlisted under His standard.
